It was not perpetrated upon Jesus, it is something that Jesus willingly undertook out of love for mankind. It was a sacrifice, not a mugging. Gibson's purpose is to, through the violence, show the extent of the burden that Jesus chose to carry. Let's look at a single instance, the recent bombings in Madrid. What would be the burden of accepting responsibility for that single act, much less all the other horrendous things man has done through the ages? The holocaust? Jonestown? North Korean prison camps? It is unimaginable, impossible to portray on the screen, but Gibson did the best he could.
