No, I don't think they will throw away their guns; there's too much money for them in it. I wouldn't be surprised if they made more money from depicting the abuse of firearms than the entire firearms industry makes for manufacturing them. I'd like to see the entertainment industry make just one movie that depicts how firearms are really used in this country, and how much effort is expended by the NRA and others to teach proper handling. Some time ago there was a man who made his living exhibition shooting at county fairs and such. I forget his exact line, but it was something like "Show me a man teaching a boy the proper way to handle a rifle, and I'll show you two good citizens. I bet if you polled NRA members you'd get a higher proportion of voters, church goers, and generally good citizens than you would in most demographic groups. Certainly the NRA does more to teach proper handling than any other group, but the media prefers the line that the NRA is just an industry pressure group. There are a few substantial manufacturers, but the industry is very fragmented and there are many small businesses doing specialty manufacturing. When Clinton was in the White House, Smith and Wesson, an old-line company that has made firearms for well over 100 years was bought up by the brits. They voluntarily cowtowed to Clinton's ideas and offended the grass roots so badly that the brits sold them back to US interests. Now the company has been forgiven and is producing many fine firearms without the encumbrances pasted on them like Clinton wanted.Message #442 from sandintoes at Mar 29, 2004 12:33 AM Do you really think they will throw away their guns, or teach proper gun handling?
