It is still possible to avoid a decline of this type. Democratic values in general and social democracy in particular have proved very robust in the past, and there is no reason to believe that they will simply vanish without a fight. But this political battle needs to be waged in all democratic countries and on all fronts. Otherwise there is a risk that Bin Laden, acting as the unwitting ally of the forces of reaction in western democratic culture, will have succeeded in seriously battering our proud pluralism and draining us of much of our freedom. Sounds a lot like "pluralism" worship to me Harvey. Unfortunately, it is a view whose value declines once you reach a critical mass of public variety such that consensus on a unified course of action can no longer be obtained when needed. I would agree that we aren't there yet, but you're hanging by a "chad." <vbg> You don't have much time though. ...I figure you're going to be safely pluralized at least through 2008.
