When I worked for Club Fed, we made people give statements "under penalties of perjury," so the consequence of lying would be the same as if you lied in a court of law.

Never had a case where a lie was prosecuted, though.

Lying to a federal agent *is* a crime.....

Hell, one can even be prosecuted now for refusing to give your name to a traffic officer who pulls you over.

But, perjury before Congress... that is a major felony.

(Possibly a significant reason why Rice won't agree to be sworn in.)
