Like you, I was but a small child at the time. My parents
brought me up with a desire to be a Christian. We attended
a Baptist church 2 or 3 times a week. I took on the values
taught there, yet there were folks there & within my
family who were racially intolerant (not my parents
though).

I watched the civil rights movement unfold with serious
bewilderment. I simply could not understand why folks
could have so much hatred for people with different skin
color.

As for liberals & conservatives, I still believe that
there were folks on both sides who distinguished
themselves & those who disgraced themselves. IMO, neither
side can seriously lay claim to leading the fight for
civil rights, although the record of votes on civil rights
legislation does seem to favor conservatives. I still
believe that there was/is plenty of blame to go around on
both sides.

I think that affirmative action as it was/is implemented
is now another liberal boondoggle. Instead of solving a
serious problem, they have created more of them. Like
welfare, it is more about politics than resolving a
serious issue.
