Yes, I agree that abortion is the primary driver but then you also have homosexuality and the Democrat's foreign policy fecklessness since Vietnam accelerating the process.

As for pandering, the GOP actually has the demographics on its side so they can afford to take their time in moving the structural majority in place to rarify abortion even before going for the divisive law changes.

James Taranto of WSJ and many others have been pointing out that more potential Democrats than potential Republicans have been aborted since Roe vs Wade (1973). Nearly 40M abortions have been performed in the US since 1973 and that ghost army of souls is beginning to account for the margin of victory in more and more places.
