How right you are. One of the mistakes we (i.e., the pro-health care reform side of the debate) make is that we let the pro-CHA guys set the agenda by claiming reform means becoming more like the U.S.

As you mentioned, we know that many other nations get better outcomes for the dollars spent, by any measurement. The Fraser Institute has some good documentation of various European blended systems that seem to work well. (It would take a while for me to find the most relevant references because I get all their publications - and they publish a lot.)

FWIW, I estimate that my brother's surgery and hospital stay cost around $13,000 CDN. The $10K hospital stay was not the limiting factor, so reducing the delay should have cost at most $3000.
