Brumar, I was wondering if anyone would try to make this argument. I agree that Bush is an idealist; but he lacks historical perspective and his approach will fail.

I also agree that the extremists fear Western style democracy. But it is not "democracy" itself they fear (in fact they want their version of democracy), but secular democracy.

For a solid background on this topic, I recommend William McNeill's book "The Rise of the West", 1963. Yes, 1963! If you have never read McNeill, I suggest "Plagues and Peoples", 1976 - a true seminal work in history.

Best to you.

OT: Let me also recommend Elizabeth Monroe's "Britain's Moment in the Middle East, 1914-1956". I think there is a newer edition, but this book is first rate.

Best to you!
