So...cows raised on grains, fed antibiotics and hormones, their meat is not really healthy and neither is the fatty acid profile...a good healthy meat is from free-grazing, grass fed animals...this is really pretty easy to get these days in most cities, there are big healthfood supermarkets, even NYC is starting to get them! YAY! anyway...wild fish, not farmed fish of any kind (most fish are farmed these days, including salmon, rainbow trout, etc etc)...you have to see it say "wild"...you can get wild sea bass, wild salmon, and those have a great fatty acid profile and are healthy proteins...the others are fed crap along with dye to color them and they are not very healthy anymore... Organic eggs...from healthy chickens running around out in the open air...an egg is a very healthy item You can get a lot of carbs from veggies, so don't leave those out...all kinds of greens, broccoli, peas and carrots if you want etc etc... And some slow digesting carbs will be okay, like beans, or a bit of whole grains...but the reason people gain weight on the SAD (standard american diet) is because it creates a kind of hyperinsulinism and thus insulin resistance, and nature made it so you put on weight when you eat a lot of carbs...because once upon a time, you got carbs ONLY in warm weather...so you needed to lay down fat for the winter... This condition is called Syndrome X and Barry Sears wrote about it, his zone diet is healthy too and not so different than Atkins... As for dairy, just try to get raw cheeses, and sheep and goat are healthiest, goat is healthy because the milk does not have to be homogenized...but there is sugar in milk, so not too much of that...forget pasteurized homogenized cow's milk, it creates cardiovascular disease... So sorry for the soapbox but the Atkins diet, if you do it wrong, could lead to some bad stuff...but if you do it right, a high HEALTHY fat, high veggie diet is good and I myself eat mostly that way for my own reasons (not for weight)
