Yes, there is a parallel there, but while they were the most influential, Pharisees were by no means the only religious society in Judaism (if I recall this correctly, there were Sadducees and another one). Nothing that compares to the Church, though, in influence, power, duration, oppression, etc.

Not that I am aware of, that is. I would be interested to hear more if you think the comparison of Pharisees to the Church is a valid one.
