Steven,

As best I can tell the service policy changed somewhere between 2000 and 2001. PC ads I have in old PC Magazine issues show that as of July 2000 Inspiron laptops and Dell Dimension XPS desktops came standard with a 3 year limited warranty. July 2001 ads in the same magazine show all advertised boxes with a 1 year warranty. Dell piled on 'more of the same' when they had the temerity to ask for an extra charge if you'd like 'priority phone service' at some point after that on their website. IBM also used to offer 3 year warranties on most of their laptops, but that has been cut to some extent.
