>>>the only effective way<<<

How about nuclear energy? I think that if the US had put the money it's wasting in Iraq into a program for fusion energy, it might not work but at least it would be headed towards something useful.

Kerry is on TV right now sounding like any other sorry old politician.

Bernanke sounds like a dogmatist; his speech lifted straight from classic economics text book. Roach is a pragmatist who sees what's going on around the world. One key part of the Bernanke's speech is the first piece of his recipe:
“First, at the macro level, policy should be directed at helping to ensure that jobs become available for those who have been displaced. In particular, over time, appropriate monetary policies can help the economy achieve maximum employment with low inflation, irrespective of the trade situation.”

If you think that the employment situation is a long term, structural, problem in this environment of rising productivity, rising fixed costs (health care benefits), and globalization, then you would bet that any fed rate hike (if there is to be one), has a very limited ceiling. That's why we heed to Greenspan's "unintended" advice of going with LIBOR mortgage.
