So you don't consider US military personnel a part of the US? Then why make a big deal out of stuff like the attack against the USS Cole? You're not being consistent.

What color is the sky in your world, Carl??

Of course we're going to have attacks against our forces in Iraq (and Afghanistan). Because we're on the offensive against their militant forces seeking to dominate the region.

But we were not officially at war when the USS Cole was bombed (although Al-Qaeda was). It required 9/11 for any US government to finally face the reality that Islamic militants were ready to carry their war against the US homeland.

And our response, appropriately enough, was to carry it right back into THEIRS. And furthermore, we have decided that, rather than wait for the existing regimes to eventually fail to these militant forces, we're going to make an attempt at altering the political and socio-economic reality in the countries in the region.

At least I hope this will be the case. Because we cannot continue to protect these regimes without demanding that they open up their societies to modernization and political diversity/democracy. These governments need to be accountable to their people. And should the citizens of those countries opt for Islamic militancy, then they will be dealt with appropriately.. as a whole.

Undeterrable fanatics are always going to be with us.. But if we don't take some direct and prophylactic actions towards sapping the militants of a ready pool of desperate and ideologically indoctrinated young adults, we're going to face a far larger problem 5-10 years from now.
