They did not suddenly appear, jump to the front of the line at the last minute, and get plum assignments despite low aptitude -- like G. Bush. Avoiding serving in Vietnam was a goal shared by many in the U.S. -- different people had different means. If Bush had wanted to serve, there was no shortage of direct means to be sure to end up in Vietnam.
