A president does not provide leadership on the Bay of Pigs or snapping up hostages from Iran. Those are best left to the Generals to plan. Strategy, tactics, logistics...

Details should be left to the generals but the responsibility for the overall strategy lies elsewhere. If there was no Bay of Pigs, it is doubtful that there would have been a Cuban Missile Crisis. Without the Cuban Missile Crisis and the guarantees that Castro got as part of the settlement, maybe Castro would be long gone.

Kennedy inherited the Bay of Pigs operation from the Eisenhower administration. Reportedly, he skeptical of the project. For good cause. It was poorly planned. But went forward with it because he did not want to appear "soft."

Strategy and tactics. Arguably, a composite failure in this instance.

My original point was, and still is, that lower level combat experience is not a qualifier for the presidency and certainly not a precursor as to how a potential president would perform as our commander in chief.

It is silly and disingenuous for Kerry to make this the centerpiece of his candidacy. He is exceedingly unpopular amongst the active military and that fact will be part of the story during the fall campaign.
