Rice gave interviews where she described herself as a person who would not have her job at Stanford if not for affirmative action. It is that context that I made that remark. When it comes to national security, race and gender should not be dominant considerations in filling top jobs. If Rice had not been promoted at Stanford because of her race, then she would not have been a likely candidate for her job as national security advisor.
