Stop putting down the national guard.

I love this kind of deflecting argument. It's similar to when one is opposed to an illegal or unjust war, the defenders say "Stop putting down the troops!"

No one is putting down the National Guard. Those who make the argument are putting down GW Bush. He used the National Guard to stay out of Vietnam (In those days, the National Guard were known as a way of "serving" stateside but not going overseas) , a war that he supposedly supported. Further, he specifically trained on a jet that they knew would never be used in Vietnam. And, as someone else mentioned, he jumped to the front of the line without merit (a talent that he has become incredibly adept at). And, finally, he then dressed up like he was a war hero. It's the hypocrisy that bothers people... it has nothing to do with disparaging the National Guard.

Though the one's at Kent State weren't so great.

<He served and Bush served> Kerry served in Vietnam. Bush did not. Vietnam was fought largely on the backs of draftees. The Guard was a way to avoid the draft. Iraq is being fought to a large extent on the backs of the Guard -- joining the Guard is no longer a way to avoid being sent to war. Bush avoided serving in Vietnam. He is no war hero. He is a draft dodger in a flight suit. As I said, I can respect people who openly opposed the war and tried to avoid the draft. I respect people who serve in the Guard. But to have wangled his way into a safe position to avoid serving in Vietnam, and now to pose in a flight suit taking credit for being a great military leader -- it is nauseating.
