Spain and Portugal were medieval plunderers. They stole a lot of gold but they did not industrialize; they did not invent. Eventually they sunk back into poverty. As for the US, there were medieval plunderers as well as the slave society. But in the end it was English Protestants who industrialized the place. The liberal protestants were more interested in $ than in God. Even today, the fanatical Protestants, a.k.a. the religious right, are a distinct minority. They are in charge right now, of course. If they stay in charge the intellectual infrastructure will be destroyed. Religious fanaticism is the enemy of science. Anyway I see the Roman Catholic Church as the most basic reason for the prolonged retardation of Latin America. The Jewish religion keeps Zionists in a place that was somebody else's for 1700 years at least, and which they consequently have to fight a perpetual war to occupy. Islam keeps the Arabs and Indonesia backward etc. etc.
