Al,

re: is America able to internalize that kind pain?

For some reason, Americans respond to images much more than words or numbers. Vietnam was fought close up, and the evening news showed the death that fleshed out the numbers. 9/11 showed the ultimate galvanizing images, over and over. This war has been fought from a distance, no images so the deaths were just numbers.

I think that changed with yesterday's evening news. I think that many American will now have a mental image of what all the hatred means. I think it was a important step in bring this war to an end.

I will be curious to see the opinion polls over the coming weeks and months. As we hear that more of our kids are killed, those images will rewind in our minds.

The horror is much more real now.
