Back in the 60s I walked many of those strip mines in SE Ohio. The only thing that would grow on them was black locust. I'm sure they have improved the technology on restoration as well, but to me the Great Plains are too precious to fool with. My brother hunts over in Eastern Montana where they mine a lot of coal that gets shipped to Oregon for coal fired plants. I'm not afraid of nuclear. Lived 40 miles from Trojan, but even up close it looked like it was just sitting there not doing nothin'.
