Enlightened self interest is what i have in mind. But it may not work. US as world cop will only take you so far. I went off in that direction because i failed to understand the consequences of military victory in iraq. Our policy makers did also. If you could travel back in time, no one in the Bush admin would propose this route now. They are too political savy to give us a mini-quag in an election year. And despite the over confidence on this thread, bush is in real trouble. Right now the only thing he has going for him is John Kerry. He has the security and terror issue but so far no jobs and perceived failure in iraq. And from the presidents view iraq is a disaster. He was told to claim victory on the carrier and now a year later we have a seemingly unmanagable triangle to deal with.
As far as enlightened self interest goes, giving the majority of the overall population (kurds and shiaa) autonomy and a shot at local types of democracy is not against our interest. We shouldnt let the triangle poison the well in the North and south. And who is to say that a three state solution which appears natural on a map is somehow counter to our interests. Mike
