07:23 AWE AT&T Wireless rolling out incentives ahead of Cingular acquisition -- WSJ (13.61 )

The WSJ reports that AT&T Wireless Services is rolling out cheaper calling plans and free fancy phones, in a bid to steady its shaky subscriber base ahead of its planned acquisition by Cingular Wireless. The carrier in terms of subscribers has been hit with widespread customer-service glitches and a last-place rating among national carriers in a major satisfaction survey. Now it's pushing back, offering new and existing customers who sign up for two years of service on its Web site an opportunity to choose from more than a dozen free phones. AT&T Wireless began marketing a $40 per month calling plan that includes 1,000 anytime minutes and unlimited nights and weekends, $10 to $20 cheaper than similar plans had cost. And the carrier has struck agreements with Cingular to allow users, at no additional charge, to roam on its networks in several large markets, including Boston and Washington, DC, which it says should improve the network quality in those cities.
