Yet another reason we should have left Saddam & the
Taliban in power. No need to worry about the greater
problems democracy might cause.

Now why on earth would it matter to you, or to me, that "Americans assume" that there will automatically be two political parties? Political scientists know that over many decades from the Foundation we evolved a system with two major political parties cobbled together out of disparate elements regardless of discord between the elements of the parties because mechanically the balance of power in our system favors that result. It wasn't planned that way. In fact, the Founders did not like the idea of political parties.

If any particular American is ignorant of that fact, whatever else he or she "assumes" about other political systems probably won't be terribly interesting or relevant to the actual mechanics of setting up a political system. However, I know* people in this country who have been called upon to help "emerging" countries - typically post-colonial - set up political systems - and they are not too stupid to know why America has a two party system.

I realize that you are a very intelligent man, and also rather jaded in your sensibilities, that you tried the "do-good" route and got burned out and cynical, but if you want to snipe at people who haven't given up yet, snipe at them for what they really don't know or can't do, please.
