not so sure that the EUR is a "sterling" currency" it had it's run (even that I am still long EUR against the USD since June 2001) and at this point no one knows which asset class would safeguard your purchasing power - my bet is on farming land - food and water for the next 5 to 10 years - remember they do not make this stuff any more.

Lumber or more precise forestry has also substantial growth potential.

It is all connected to the unchecked population growth worldwide the most potent danger to our standard of living, to which it seems no one gives a dam

As to energy advances in biomass, methane hydrates, nuclear power and possible fusion will shift energy supplies from dependence on crude oil so I do not see at this point a substantial upside (except of speculative spikes) in oil companies
