TNR Blog - &c - THE DAY THE KERRY CAMPAIGN DIED?: Much has been written about how John Kerry's more focused, aggressive approach helped salvage his campaign last fall and put him back on track to win the Democratic nomination this winter. Less has been written about how this strategy was largely conceived and pushed by former Kerry campaign manager Jim Jordan, who was ousted in a campaign shake-up last November, and Kerry ad-man Jim Margolis, who cut the widely-praised commercials that brought this new image to life on the airwaves. And even less has been written about how Bob Shrum, a top Kerry adviser, initially opposed this strategy.

The concern was that, with Jordan gone (largely at the hands of Shrum), Kerry might eventually revert to his uninspiring late-summer form--at which point he was getting throttled by Howard Dean just about everywhere on the planet. (Who knew how long Shrum would feel like sticking with a strategy he'd tried to derail.) But at least you could reassure yourself that someone like Margolis still had a lot of influence over the campaign's broader message. Well, no more. As Ryan Lizza reports in a Campaign Journal world exclusive, Margolis has decided to leave the campaign, and Shrum appears to have been an important factor in the decision. Which raises the question: With many Democrats already worried that Kerry lacks a general-election message, and with the people most capable of crafting that message now gone, is there hope for this campaign?
