NEC Elec to spend Y5 bln for future chip expansion
Monday April 5, 3:49 am ET

TOKYO, April 5 (Reuters) - Japanese chip maker NEC Electronics Corp (Tokyo:6723.T - News) said on Monday it would spend five billion yen ($48 million) to construct a factory building to prepare for future expansion of production.
The new building would allow NEC Electronics, the world's eighth-largest chip maker, to add chip-making equipment capable of processing 10,000 units of 300-mm, or 12-inch, wafers a month.

"In our line of business, it is too late if you start expanding your capacity after orders from your clients firm up. So making a factory building beforehand is the least we should do," an NEC Electronics spokesman said.

The chip-making unit of Japanese electronics conglomerate NEC Corp (Tokyo:6701.T - News) said no decision had been made on the timing of the installation of chip-making equipment or production capacity.

NEC Electronics, which specialises in system chips used in digital consumer electronics and cars, is currently building a production line to make microchips from 300-mm silicon wafers at its facility in Yamagata prefecture, northern Japan.

The new line, which is slated to come into commercial production by the end of the year, will have a monthly capacity of 4,000 wafers.

The construction of the factory building, which will also be set up at the Yamagata complex, is scheduled to be completed by December.

Shares in NEC Electronics closed Monday trade up 4.38 percent at 8,350 yen, outperforming the Tokyo stock market's electric machinery index (^IELEC.T - News), which rose 3.09 percent. ($1=104.15 Yen)
