We have some CJ-5's in our club. They do great offroading, the biggest problem in rock crawling for them is the carburator if they havent replaced the engine to one with fuel injectors. V-8 doesnt do much for rockcrawling as a rule unless he is running monster tires as its all in the GEARING, lower is better. haha. When I ran the Rubicon Trail (22 miles) its a 3 day trip. Now in the mud, thats another thing. Often you got to REV IT UP to clear the mud from the tread. V-8 is fine there but you better have the rest of the drivetrain and axles beefed up too.
I have done some minor engine modifications not listed which brings my 190hp engine up to about 200hp but its the torque thats impressive (235 ft.lbs at about 1,800 rpms).
As to center of gravity, thats my main concern. Thats why I put in the BELLY UP transmission skid. I gained 2 5/8 inches of clearance still sticking with my 33" tires. Only low points I have now are differential and lower control arms, all are skid plated. jdn
