Schmandel, I guess my logic goes something like:

1. Anyone who puts their life at risk fighting for their country is a patriot; patriots, in this context, are heroes

2. What qualifies as fighting for one's country is a decision made by that country's leadership; a country's leadership may be fat or skinny, dumb or smart, ruthless or kind, an elected president or dictator, etc.-- for better or worse, they have put themselves in a position to wield power

3. Thus, regardless of who is in power, how just or unjust a war might be, or what motivated someone to fight, they are still heroes

However, once we shift the discussion to leadership itself, all bets are off.
