That's where we differ........before moving to crush them, I would attempt to resolve the issue through compromise.

Often that is the best way to deal with situations. But sometimes compromise is not possible or not reasonable (we can't effectively compromise with bin Laden). Other times real compromise is only possible after you have moved to crush the enemy. Also some time you really have no one to negotiate with. (For example it seems that there is no one who could really give peace to Israel in exchange for a Palestinian state, if we could negotiate with bin Laden and he sincerely agreed that terrorism should stop the groups he has funded, led, inspired, or trained would probably continue to operate, and who would we negotiate peace in Iraq with?)
