It's been my experience that crude spikes correspond really well with recessions.

Clinton had the luxury of cheap oil during much of his presidency, and we had a nice boom.

When oil spiked in the late 90's, the boom ended.

With oil prices staying so high, i'm dubious about what kind of expansion we'll be able to get going and sustain this time around.
