Thanks for sharing. Abortion enthusiasts don't want people to know how rapidly an unborn child develops. The cancer risks of abortion and the risks of becoming sterile are also hidden by those who promote abortion and don't want people to know the medical facts and realities.

Your sister's fetus was the size of your hand at three months? I think you have misremembered the stage of your sister's pregnancy, Ryan. At 3 months, your sister's fetus weighed approximately an ounce. One site said "between a half ounce and an ounce."

Four weeks: The fertilized egg has made it's seven- to ten-day trip to the uterus, where it implants cozily into the endometrial surface. It is now called a blastocyst...

Six weeks: about the size of a peppercorn...

Eight weeks: about the size of a cherry...

Eleven weeks: eight grams (about a quarter of an ounce)...The primitive "tail" is now gone

Twelve weeks: 60 to 65 millimeters long or about two and a half inches long, and weighs about 14 grams (above it says that eight grams is about a quarter of an ounce)

3 months: about 3 inches long and weighs about an ounce. Over 90% of all abortions are performed before this stage has been reached.

Thirteen weeks: about seven centimeters crown-to-rump, about two ounces, intestines have now moved from outside the body to inside the abdomen.

[You'll when you google that there is inconsistency in the exact measurements; there must be a range.]

Now, I think this is important:

6 months/26 weeks: 14" long and almost two pounds...Interlinking of the brain's neurons begins. Some rudimentary brain waves can be detected. The fetus will be able to feel pain for the first time. It will become conscious of its surroundings. State laws and medical association regulations generally outlaw abortions at this stage, except under very unusual circumstances.

Let me emphasize the fact that until at least 22 to 23 weeks of pregnancy, fetuses do not have a functioning neural apparatus. The brain is unequipped for cognition. It almost certainly cannot receive pain signals. This latter is controversial, since there are reflex reactions to stimuli (drawing away) somewhat earlier. They resemble the patellar reflex, with which my knee would jerk when tapped even should I go into a coma and feel nothing. Thus the exact gestational age at which pain can be registered is much debated among scientists, but it is not early. Cognition at the level of a newborn requires yet another jump in fetal maturation.

the fetus wasn't a lump of cells. It was fully developed.

Think of what "fully developed" means, and of your own knowledge. The fetus has lungs, but they are so late to function that lung immaturity is one of the main causes of mortality in even 7-month premature infants. The lungs aren't "fully developed" until very close to term. The synaptic connections of the brain are similar.

I'll also pipe in and tell you that an unviable fetus at three minths is termed a natural abortion, medically, and the main reason is what doctors called "a blighted ovum". This means there was quite likely an zygote which was so misformed that it spontaneously aborted.

That's what the body does. And I suppose if I were a zealot who want to twist my believes about God and abortion into an unidentifiable mess, as some here do, I could make the statement that God "naturally aborts" many imperfect zygotes.

But I won't say this because, like zeolotry of any kind, it's ludicrous.

Also, the term "stillbirth" refers to fetuses farther along than your sister's. My deep sympathy goes out to her.

Here are the accepted medical definitions:

Stillbirth
refers to babies born dead after 24 or more weeks completed gestation.

Perinatal death
refers to babies who are stillborn or die within the first 7 days of life.

Neonatal death
refers to deaths in the first 4 weeks of life.

Miscarriage
refers to babies born dead before 24 completed weeks gestation
