Sigh. And some have been known to accuse Juan Cole of anti-semitism because of a critical comment about Wolfowitz!!


I'ts a bit of a sweeping statment but encompasses a cultural reality with a great deal of predictive power. If Iraq was full of, say, Rumanians, the people would be reacting quite differently. People who are familiar with Iraqis predicted the reaction - that injured pride is a main driver with Iraqis, along with tribal ties and the usual Arab honor-shame motivations.

Why it's not PC to notice that different cultures really truly do react differently to the same stimuli, I have never figured out.
