Bill, you are wandering. I've said, repeatedly, here that I think there is more than enough blame to go around on this one. When you read the Coll book, you will see more than enough missteps by everyone from Reagan forward.

The only point I am making about Clarke right here is that he makes two claims no one has credibly dismissed. I will be happy to read any material you wish to post here or send me privately that purports to contradict his claims.

I'm not addressing other claims he made. I would be happy to discuss specific ones and with specific contrary evidence. It's just that those two helped me think this thing through.

I do think the attack on Clarke has been a highly orchestrated attempt to paint him as partisan in order not to address the issues he raises. I'm simply saying, let's address some issues. Here are two that make sense to me.

"History shows that Clinton had eight years to take out
Bin Laden and didn't do it. Bush had eight months and
didn't do it."

Bush actually had a lot less than 8 months......

TALKING BACK
....<font size=4>This administration<font size=3> came into office to
discover that al Qaeda had been allowed to grow into a
full-blown menace. It <font size=4>lost six precious weeks to the
Florida recount – and then weeks after Inauguration Day to
the go-slow confirmation procedures of a 50-50 Senate. As
late as the summer of 2001, pitifully few of Bush’s own
people had taken their jobs at State, Defense, and the
NSC.<font size=3> Then it was hit by 9/11. And now, now the same
people who allowed al Qaeda to grow up, who delayed the
staffing of the administration, who did nothing when it
was their turn to act, who said nothing when they could
have spoken in advance of the attack – these same people
accuse George Bush of doing too little? There’s a long
answer to give folks like that – and also a short one. And
the short one is:<font size=4> How dare you?<font size=3>
