I'm well aware of the way we destroyed a budding democracy in Iran in 1953 when the Iranians dared to try to take control of their oil resouces (imagine that, a country that actually wants to control it's own resources, what a crime?!?). Our installation and support of the Shah or Iran is certainly one of the worst things the U.S. ever did. Our CIA also trained his secret police SAVAK. Most Americans don't realize that our support for the Shah is why the Iranians were so pissed at us in 1979/1980 and overthrew his regime.

Iran was the first time the CIA meddled in another country's affairs, and set the precedent for all the subsequent coups the U.S. undertook over the years (almost always deposing democracy and installing ruthless dictators).

I do think that's water under the bridge with most arabs though. They're more concerned with our troops in the holy land, our support of Isreal, and our current proping up of repressive regimes that keep the people down, but keep the oil flowing. Those are the issues that if we could resolve them, and pull out of the region, we'd see terrorism subside substanially. They just wouldn't have much of a beef with us any longer.
