I care much less about rewarding or punishing Clarke for lies than I care about understanding what happened. If Clarke has something to contribute to that understanding, I want to know about it. If a liar gains something from that transaction, that's unfortunate, but part of the price we have to pay for understanding. I'm not about to bury my head in the sand to avoid the secondary effect of rewarding a liar.
