Winston Churchill is supposed to have said "the truth is so precious that it must be wrapped in a blanket of lies."

And he certainly did say:

"I have always felt that a politician is to be judged by the animosities he excites among his opponents."
Sir Winston Churchill

Perhaps there is hope for me yet in this field.

********
Or, maybe not. I don't seem to have the stomach for the lies that Mencken saw as the domain of the successful politician:

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace in a continual state of alarm (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing them with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."
