Notice how the expression "imminent threat" arose from concepts of international law. There was also a lot of discussion in the months before the Iraq resolution concerning the international law meaning of "imminent threat". I think the article has a point regarding imminent threat and people's abilities to fill in the words that are not being said but the connection to international law means little to me. When Bush was trying to convince us to go to war, it had been less than a year after 9/11. The country alternated between shock and fear. It was very easy to manipulate Americans into believing Saddam was an imminent threat by just suggesting that he was a danger. It wasn't necessary to say 'imminent'.......Americans heard it as imminent. And whenever people began to balk, the Bushies would up the ante.......culminating with the February dog and pony show in front of the UN. It was a well done marketing plan of fear to which Americans were subjected........and ultimately, they fell for it......hook, line and sinker. Frankly, I could not believe it was happening. I thought some powerful, reasoned voice would object and bring people to their senses but it never happened. So now, its not surprising that conservatives are hanging their hats on specific words.......its the only way they can save their butts. Bush's plan of fear was much like kids sitting around a campfire......one kid doesn't have to say specifically he/she saw or heard something to get the rest of the kids anticipating that a boogieman is about to jump out from the dark. In the same way, Bush didn't have to say that Saddam was going to blow up American cities.......he only had to hint at it. And his cohorts like Cheney and Rumsfeld were less subtle........together they created a climate of fear where people were expecting any moment that a building or a train or a plane was about to explode......thanks to Saddam and al Qaeda. Well, Bush got his war and now, he's sitting on an opened Pandora's Box. It makes all this speculation about imminence specious. I would laugh if it weren't for the fact that Americans are dying in that hell hole called Iraq. Sadly, the joke is not just on Bush. I can only hope that Bush loses by not getting a second term as president and retires to his ranch in disgrace. ted
