Social Security is not assistance. It is insurance.

<<I will agree if you agree that Democrats use SS to scare old people and polarize debate.>>

You should agree or not regardless of what i do, however i do agree with you.

But there is one shred of truth to the Democrat's demagoguery: the Republicans need SS to be facing a crisis so they can privatize it.

So to that extent, the Republicans really are trying to take away SS.

I think both sides should agree that the way SS does things is stupid and economically counter-productive. They should make it a means tested welfare program paid for by ordinary income taxes.

But that'll never happen for lots and lots of reasons. The government needs to become more bureaucratic but instead it's becoming more political. I'd like to think there are experts who can address these types of problems, and i know they're not the politicians.

With Bushies in charge "scare tactics" are true, even worse than ever before. Social Security, Medicare, the environment, government deficits, possible bankrupcy of the government, possible energy crises, possible worse terrorism, all true. Just do the math and look at the facts.

The Bush Medicare plan is a Trojan Horse virus written by the HMO's and drug companies to suck so many billions into their own pockets that over time Medicare will go bankrupt. It's thoroughly corrupt and those who voted for it are now wishing they hadn't. Despite using PUBLIC FUNDS to wage a huge TV ad campaign pushuing the Bush plan in the last poll 53% of seniors reject the plan. They're not as stupid or senile as they look.

If you don't pay for SS you don't get it. Where did you get the story that it was a freebie? Whoever told you that is a liar. Or else you are.
