Yiwu, the 14 year old boy I saw working huge hours in the youth hostel in Beijing wasn't enjoying much benefit at all. Neither were most people working for a pittance. Mao's boot on the neck resulted in decades of continuation of poverty and privation. Life in the hutong is bleak.

The current Chinese system still stinks [literally]. That boy's life is hard going. We westerners made it better. Now he has a new bicycle. Soon he'll have a CDMA cyberphone. Before you know it, he'll be swooping at 1000 km/hour around China and to Europe in superconducting, magnetically levitated, electronically and photonically controlled vehicles.

The current China system is vastly better than it was, but it's still not good. Planning a war on Taiwan is another dumb idea. Dictatorial types just can't leave other people alone.

Hordes of people are still leaving China to live in civilized places. Heck, look at you! While you rant that China is so great, and we westerners so hopeless, you prefer to live in the wicked west. Maybe you are making some money to take home, where it's culturally comfortable. We did that in Canada [we preferred living in NZ, but made do in Canada to make money]. Friends from India did that in Belgium.

When people are leaving the USA, Canada and NZ to live in China, as much as they are going the other way, then we'll know that China is as good as the west.

Though I grant you the legal process is much less time consuming and costly when the accused is denied legal representation, any serious investigation of the crime, a jury trial and when capital punishment is carried out on the spot.

What the hell is due process anyway, other than a damn waste of taxpayers' money?
