and would not the effect, caused from outside, appear to be without a mechanism from our standpoint?

Cause and effect are local phenominia.
By that I mean that you can't have a cause that just skips in with no apparent pathway. The fact that the effect is within our universe means that the causation must be compatible with that universe.

Sure, there could be some bolt from another dimension, but it would leave a trail of some sort. It has to pass into or through our universe to have any effect. We may not be able to understand what happened, but unless the effect was below the threshold of our measurement we would notice that something happened. The mechanism of the cause would be at least as visible as the effect.

No information can connect cause with effect faster than the top speed (the speed of light). This provides another constraint from how and where a cause originates.

*Edit - I can tell my phrases are not clear.

Cause and effect are local to each other (not necessarily local to us in particular).
