Former HSBC equity analyst tracks HDD price changes on the internet.

How do things look for the current quarter? Better than last quarter, at least until this past week. Prices had firmed up, and the 80Gb category has even experienced a slight price uptick in recent weeks. If the prices would have held through the end of June, then there was a chance that drive manufacturers could have surprised investors next quarter.

But then last week, things began sliding again. Prices fell 2% in the 80Gb category, and the 120Gb category saw price declines of a little more than half that amount. Apparently the two-month pricing detente in the storage market was called off almost as quickly as it started. Will that brief period of price stability prove to have been enough to save the quarter? It looks increasingly doubtful.
