Brackenridge, Children's part of Medicaid test

The emergency departments at Brackenridge Hospital and Children's Hospital of Austin have been selected as Texas test sites for a Medicaid integrity pilot program.

The program is designed to help reduce fraud by making sure only those people eligible for Medicaid services actually are receiving them.

In Travis County, 30,000 Medicaid receipients have received special identification "smart cards" containing microchips that hold information about the cardholders' fingerprints. Special biometric scanners will be employed to identify the Medicaid recipients when their "smart cards" are used to obtain benefits.

Five Texas counties in addition to Travis are participating in the pilot program: Cameron, Dallas, Harris, Hidalgo and Tarrant.

Brackenridge and Children's Hospital of Austin are part of the locally based Seton Healthcare Network.
