Waldemar Milewicz and his Polish-Algerian colleague Mounir Bouamrane were traveling from the Iraqi capital to the central city of Hillah when their vehicle came under heavy fire, a Polish Embassy spokesman told CNN. Jerzy Ernst, a cameraman for Poland's state-run TVP network, was wounded in Friday's attack, which took place 30 kms south of Baghdad near Mahmoudiyah, the official said. An Italian journalist traveling in the same direction said the driver of the car was also wounded. The Polish-led coalition command issued a statement on the attack, saying it began with the "detonation of an improvised explosive device and small arms fire." The embassy official said he did not know if they were wearing body armor. News footage showed that the crew's car had a sign marked "press." Lorenzo Cremonesi, a correspondent for Corriere della Sera, a Milan-based daily newspaper, told CNN the Polish crew left Baghdad and was heading to the holy Shiite city of Najaf, which is now a major hotspot in Iraq. Coalition forces have been fighting members of the Mehdi Army militia, the armed force affiliated with radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Cremonesi, also heading in the same direction, got to the scene minutes after the shooting, which took place between 9:10 and 9:20 a.m.. He said the car was peppered with bullets. He said people in the crowd at the scene of the shooting were telling his local fixer/ translator that the killers were looking for more journalists to kill. CNN correspondent Ben Wedeman said the attack took place in exactly the same spot where two CNN employees were shot dead in January. Police inspect the journalists' car after the attack near Baghdad. The Polish command confirmed the deaths and said the remains were transported to a military hospital in Baghdad. The wounded journalist was transported to a hospital. Milewicz, 47, had worked for TVP for 20 years and won numerous awards for his reporting from Chechnya, Afghanistan and other war zones. TVP led its noon newscast with a tribute to the reporter. "He went wherever there were conflicts to report them," anchorwoman Danuta Holecka said, according to The Associated Press. "He risked his life for us to show the world as it is." Prime Minister Marek Belka also paid tribute: "The news about Milewicz's death is shocking. I knew him personally. His programmes allowed us to understand the human dimension of suffering." An estimated 27 journalists have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists. Last week, the committee ranked Iraq as the world's most dangerous place to be a journalist. cnn.com
