It happened before when the Europeans took the holy sights during the Cruzades to "protect" them.

But it is not feasible:

1) the Europeans would have to be on board and the public opinion wouldn't accept that.
2) the cost in terms of lives would be unbearable, if you'd thrown Iran and Saudi Arabia in.

My opinion is: the adventure in the Iraqi sands is the end of the beginning. The costs of protecting Israel is becoming too costly. Once the price reaches a given level, the US will be drop it.
