Nader Fails To Make Oregon Ballot
Independent Candidate Vows To 'Be Back'
thewbalchannel.com

PORTLAND -- Of all states, Ralph Nader should have had no trouble getting onto the Oregon ballot given the support he has had there in the past.

But Nader failed to collect the 1,000 signatures he needed at a Portland gathering, an early blow for the independent presidential candidate.

Political observers had expected Nader would easily draw 1,000 supporters at a convention Monday night. It was organized for the purpose of making Oregon the first state where Nader would qualify for the 2004 ballot.

Only 741 people showed up to sign the petitions -- nearly 300 short of the 1,000 required by Oregon law.

Still, Nader said he would not abandon his quest to qualify for the Oregon ballot. He said he would make use of another option under Oregon law, collecting 15,000 signatures over a three-month period.
