TC,
Having a problem with Avast anti-virus.
Support wants me to edit the ini file.
I know you can run regedit to open the registry, but what opens the ini files?

Thanks,
Steve

excitement, excitment - I think I have found the culprit

if you look at that log I sent you, you will find an entry for "windows/system32/zopescj.exe" - this is the only unidentifiable entry. plus, it has no popup description

now I ran hijack on my other system, and that Item does not exist.

so I tried using the "fix" option on hijacker, and that works for about one or two pages, and then it's back.
then I tried to rename that exe, but it's in use, so I can't do that

question is, how can i get rid of that thing now!

Bob

I just want to follow up with that problem I mentioned at the beginning of the month in which every single page loaded with IE caused extremely heavy CPU usage in what appeared to be an exchange between IE and windows explorer. this usage tied up the computer for about 5 seconds every time a page was loaded.

I used Hijack to determine that there was a program called
"zopescj.exe" running from the Windows/System32 folder which semed to be an unauthorized program. I had some difficulty removing it due to the fact I couldn't remember the administrator passsword, but I was finally able to delete the program and it fixed the problem, IE pages now load normally.

anyone having problems with "slow" pages may want to look into this. evidently my wife loaded this program onto her machine about the time of the mydoom messages. it was dated nov 2003.

anyway, thanks very much for referring me to pitstop and hijack - I would never have found the problem otherwise

thecow, you were right a while ago when you mentioned a minimum processor speed for WinXP and I disagreed and said my 600 MHz Pentium in my laptop was fast enough. I now have an emachine with a 2.8GHz Celeron and the difference is noticable, especially when opening web pages.

I bought this machine hoping it would connect to the web. The old 400 MHz emachine desktop had failed to do so. It turned out the NEW PC would not connect either until I depowered cable modem and router and then powered up modem - waited a few minutes, powered up router - waited until the red self-checking lights went out and then turned on the PC.
Now all is OK, I got a new PC under false pretenses and its YOUR fault this time. :)

I recommend this emachine bundle...
eMachines T2885 Computer, EView 17F3 17-in. CRT Monitor, Lexmark Z705 Printer. Intel Celeron 2.8 GHz CPU. 512 MB DDR RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD-ROM & CD-RW Drives

$470 after rebates till May 1. at Circuit City, Best Buy and Office Depot.
