Explosions have rocked an oil refinery about 13 miles east of Gallup.

Witnesses say two explosions occurred around 9 a.m. this morning at the Giant Industries refinery, which is along Interstate 40 near mile marker 39.

The McKinley County Sheriff's Office says three people at the scene suffered life-threatening burns. They have been transported to a Gallup hospital.

Mike Kerstein was at the Giant Travel Center about a mile away at the time of the blast. He said you could feel the entire building shake.

Kerstein said a huge fireball could be seen burning above the refinery as he and other customers were evacuated from the travel center.

Firefighters are trying to contain the blaze and may call in outside assistance. There are fears of further explosions occurring.

Drivers are asked to avoid that section of I-40.
