What's the logic there? We armed Hussein through proxies in Iraq vs Iraq therefore? The fact that we expunged Iraq from Kuwait in 1991 should tell you something about temporary nature of many geopolitical alliances.

Saddam Hussein went from being Iraq's powerbroker to being Iraq's President during the last year of the hapless Carter administration. In desperation at the Iranian hostage crisis, the Carter administration encouraged Iraq to attack Iran. Under the Reagan administration, our policy was to keep Iran and Iraq fighting to a debilitating regional stalemate while we fought the Cold War against an increasingly desperate Soviet Union that, if you recall, invaded Afghanistan in 1980 and was already busy brokering the doomed marriage between Christianity and Marxism in Latin America, our own backyard.
