Even that would not have the deflationary effect of a rigid gold standard.

What we really do not want is a freezing up of economic activity and a cessation of business. It is possible to cause this. But it would be better to have 10% per year inflation than 3% per year deflation.

I am sure happy that I do not have to take responsibility for the U.S. economy.

I do think Greenspan missed a major opportunity by refusing to raise margin interest rates in 1999. He had the power and the tools and he did not use them.
