However I do agree that the tax code is an abomination. When tax professionals can't agree on how to interpret the code, than how can lay people figure it out? Then you have the IRS which doesn't know up from down either. Ever get a straight answer out of them at tax time? NOT!

Never, never, rely on the IRS to answer your tax questions. Most of the people they have helping out at tax time are VITA volunteers who are very poorly trained.

I agree with you the tax code needs overhaul. Unfortunately, every time they try to do it, they only make it worse. Everyone has their favorite deduction, credit, etc. and it creeps in. Whenever there is a major amendment, they make numerous mistakes and then need a reconciliation act to correct the errors.

Not a good system. That said, it's not, as AS contends, Cheney-Bush's tax code. Its the tax code we've been living with through successive democratic and republican administrations, with minor variations and amendments, for years.

A CEO making 100 million bonus can get away with paying tax on only 1 million. Read "Perfectly Legal" if you want to see how. These are pricisely the guys Cheney-Bush represents, those and the old money types with 300 million in dividend earning stocks.
